Three Ways To Reverse Pollinate Female Cannabis Plants

In today's episode, I'll be discussing the three different ways to reverse pollinate a female cannabis plant to create S1 seeds and feminized pollen. [0:52] into some amazing cannabis content. Let's begin. In this first segment, I'm going to discuss two different ways that are effective, but not the industry preferred method or the way that most breeders like to use. However, these methods can create just as strong of genetics and just as quality of seeds if done right. Now I will say the first method we're going to
[1:13] discuss is the last way I would personally choose since the rate of unstable genetics from this method is very high. The first method I'm going to discuss is interfering with light cycles to induce self-preservation and pollen sacs to form. This method of reversing a female plant can potentially lead to higher hermaphrodite traits within the offspring, and more generally will not create
[1:34] a pure XX chromosome pollen. Now, that is unless the plant only contains X chromosomes, which if the plant already contains only X chromosomes and has no chance of producing Y chromosomes, reversing the female using light interference can be a cheap and effective way at producing some first generation S1 seeds of that specific strain to allow you to maintain those genetics for years to
[1:57] come. Now along with collecting seeds, you'll be able to collect pollen that will be XX chromosome if your mother plant did not contain any Y chromosomes to start. This means you can create feminized offspring if you dust that pollen onto a female with a very low chance of hermaphrodites as long as your original mother was very stable to begin
[2:16] with. Using light interference is only useful if your initial genetics are truly quality and will work well with this method. I normally don't recommend any grower to use this method on regular photoperiod plants, since the pollen will not be a pure XX chromosome pollen. For those wondering how to actually make this method work for plants that do meet the criteria, it's simple.
[2:39] While in the third or fourth week of flower, turn the lights off for 24 hours, then turn them on to an 18/6 schedule for three days. After three days, go back to 12/12 for three more days. After those three days, do one more 24-hour period of darkness and switch back to 12/12 permanently. You should see nanners begin to form and mature.
[3:00] Once you see nanners forming, just allow your plant to ripen them, shake and dust your plant, or collect your pollen and dust. Your plant will then revert back to female hormones once pollinated and on a consistent 12/12 schedule, and drop most of the late bloomed pollen sacs that did not mature. You really only need a small amount of pollen
[3:18] to seed out your whole plant, so you'll have a light reverse feminized seeds forming if you picked a quality mother that met the criteria in no time. Now if you have any chance of Y chromosomes in your DNA pool from your mother, this means your offsprings that your mother create will either end up with traits that cause them to hermaphrodite easier, or you
[3:38] will have a male plant every so many female plants you pop. This is why this method is not the most effective at reversing a plant to create a truly female or feminized offspring and pollen. Now the second method for the first segment we'll discuss is a much better method and works extremely well when done right. This method requires the use of high PPM colloidal silver.
[3:57] Colloidal silver sprayed in a very fine mist onto a flowering plant once a day for two to three weeks once that plant shows pistils will cause the plant to create male pollen sacs that are filled with XX chromosome pollen. No matter if the mother plant was a regular photoperiod or feminized plant. Colloidal silver bonds with the copper molecules inside the plant and forcibly
[4:15] activates the process that a plant would utilize in nature for self-preservation, which is the release of male plant hormones in a female plant to create male plant parts and pausing ethylene. Now the cool part about silver is the fact that it helps block out the Y chromosome in the DNA or genetic information when the pollen is created in some sort of
[4:33] scientific way that I just don't understand yet, but I know the basis of it is the fact that bonding happens between silver and copper molecules within the plant among other bonds that the silver molecules actually bond to. Colloidal silver helps stabilize the reversal process, making the offspring a lot more stable and generally 90% to 99% female offspring with the first generation of S1 seeds
[4:57] with very little to no traits of hermaphrodite problems. I don't understand the full science behind it, but that is my understanding of colloidal silver working with the plant. Now 15 PPM to 30 PPM colloidal silver is preferred and you do not want to drench your plant. Just lightly mist a few major colas once a day for one to two weeks after pistils have developed.
[5:16] Careful though, spraying colloidal silver too heavily on your plants can suffocate them, so again, a light mist will be perfect and you'll have results in no time. Now that's really it to reversing a female plant for these first two methods. I personally have videos on my YouTube channel, the Cannabis Chronicles, utilizing the colloidal silver method and I produced very quality offspring that
[5:34] matches every single trait of the mother plant I used, along with having collected a decent bit of pollen. I personally like the colloidal silver method, especially if you know how to make homemade colloidal silver. It produces very strong, stable, and quality results. In that last segment, I told you all there was an even more effective spray that many breeders consider even more effective at stabilizing feminized offspring and pollen than colloidal silver, and
[7:02] that spray is silver thiosulfate spray. Silver thiosulfate spray, or STS spray, acts exactly in the same way that colloidal silver acts, using silver to bind to copper and block the production of ethylene in the plant for a short period of time to produce male plant parts and pollen filled with XX chromosomes. Now, the major difference is that STS spray can be
[7:24] toxic when inhaled, and it requires a little more science-based skills or some YouTube video research for proper safe use, and the crystals used inside of the STS spray can be ignited, I believe, so certain sprays can be flammable. Now, don't quote me on the flammable part. This is something I've heard several times from farmers, but I'm not finding much
[7:43] research on the sprays myself being flammable or ever having ignited, but the ingredients are flammable when used in high quantities like silver nitrate. What I do know is this: STS generally requires a face mask like a respirator for science or lab work when spraying. It's really, really not good for your lungs or to breathe in for a multitude of reasons. If you're unfamiliar with the STS ingredients,
[8:06] silver nitrate is one of them, and nitrate poisoning is no joke, especially silver nitrate poisoning. Now, that's not to say that it's impossible to use STS at home without being safe, because many people do. However, this is not something you want to willy-nilly mess around with. You want to take it seriously and understand the dangers when working
[8:24] with STS. STS does work a lot faster to produce male plant parts in fewer applications than colloidal silver. However, if you don't make your own STS spray at home, it can be a little harder to find and potentially more expensive than colloidal silver. For me personally, I think STS and colloidal silver are equally as quality depending on the brand or solution you use.
[8:46] PPM of silver in the solutions are what matters a lot when reversing female cannabis plants, whether it's STS spray or colloidal silver. I generally use 20 PPM or higher colloidal silver, aiming towards 30 PPM to create the results that make me satisfied for long-term stable breeding projects. If I were to buy an STS spray or make my own, I would aim for the same PPM, probably keeping it around 20 to
[9:09] 25 PPM to reduce harm of silver nitrate particles while spraying them in the air. That's another big reason that personally, colloidal silver is my number one choice and STS would be my second, but for so many breeders and cultivators, I see STS spray being the preferred choice. This may be due to how easy it is to make yourself once you understand how to
[9:26] create it versus the process of creating your own colloidal silver. I've read on several threads of various forums that many growers have issues getting good PPM solutions for their homemade colloidal silver setups, but have great outcomes with STS sprays they make. So I think it may just be personal preference and what you have access to. That's really it, though, for reversing a female cannabis plant.
[9:46] It's just a matter of applying several applications of STS spray over a one to two-week period or applying colloidal silver for the time periods it needs to work. Otherwise, you can try light interruptions to test all of this out if you want to just break into reversing plants to dip your toes into the water. Reverse pollination lets you turn a female cannabis plant into a source of feminized (XX) pollen so you can make S1 seeds and preserve your favourite genetics. In this Homegrown Cannabis Co. Potcast episode, Kronic explains three methods. First, light interference — manipulating the dark cycle to stress the plant into forming pollen sacs — which is the cheapest but riskiest (higher chance of hermaphrodite traits unless the mother is XX-only). Second, colloidal silver (15-30 PPM, lightly misted daily for one to two weeks after pistils show), which binds with copper to block ethylene and reliably produces 90-99% female offspring. Third, silver thiosulfate (STS) spray, which works the same way but faster and in fewer applications — though it contains silver nitrate, requires a respirator, and demands real caution.
