[00:07] Welcome back to How to Grow Cannabis Outdoors with Nikki and Swami. This is Episode 5 — the vegetative stage guide. Your plants are in the ground, they're growing, and now it's all about building structure and setting yourself up for a big harvest.

[00:25] We love the vegetative stage. This is when you really see your plants start to express themselves. Some get bushy and wide, others reach for the sky. Getting to know each plant's personality during veg is one of the real joys of outdoor growing.

[01:05] The amount of growth you get during the vegetative stage directly determines your yield at harvest. A plant that builds strong roots, multiple branching points, and a wide canopy will produce far more flowers than one left untrained and cramped.

[01:55] Training during the vegetative stage is essential for maximising outdoor yields. Low-stress training, topping, and tying down branches all work to create a wider, more even canopy that catches more sunlight. Do this work early and do it consistently.

[03:10] Nutrition during veg is all about nitrogen. Your plants need it to build leaves and branches. Keep an eye on leaf colour — deep green is what you want. Yellowing lower leaves can be normal, but widespread yellowing signals a deficiency.

[04:30] Scouting for pests and disease during veg is much easier than dealing with an infestation in flower. Check under leaves, look for discolouration, and act at the first sign of any problem. Prevention is always better than cure.

[05:45] As days shorten and you approach the flip to flower, your plants will start to slow their vegetative growth. This is your signal that the transition is coming. Make sure your training is complete and your support structures are in place before the stretch begins.

[07:13] We hope you've enjoyed this guide to the vegetative stage. Coming up next — the flowering stage, where all your hard work pays off. See you in the garden.

The vegetative stage is where your outdoor cannabis plants build the structure that determines their eventual yield. In EP5 with Swami Select and Homegrown Cannabis Co., Nikki and Swami cover what to expect during veg, how to encourage healthy canopy development, training techniques, nutrition, and how to monitor for early problems.
