[00:03] July is a wonderful time in Northern California. Once your cannabis plants have shown their sex, it's time to transplant some into the final growing area.

[00:20] Welcome back to How to Grow Cannabis Outdoors with Nikki and Swami.

[00:31] We prefer to put the plants in the ground in circular mounds that have been prepared with various amendments. If you have a place in your regular garden, transplant your starts to a bed with clear space around it — a healthy plant can reach a six foot diameter. You can plant clover, potatoes, or other companion plants around the base.

[00:55] When you transplant the small starts to their final spot, be careful taking the roots out of their pot so as not to break the root ball. It's often good to water the pots a little bit before moving the plant because damp soil holds together better. Gently scruff up the roots if they're all bunched together.

[01:30] Once your plants are in their final spot and starting to put on size during the vegetative stage, you'll want to think ahead about support. As plants move into flower and buds develop, branches can become extremely heavy — especially on high-yielding outdoor plants.

[02:30] Staking is essential for outdoor cannabis plants carrying large colas. Use bamboo stakes, wooden dowels, or purpose-built plant supports. Tie branches loosely with soft ties or string — never anything that will cut into the branch. Do this before the weight becomes an issue, not after branches start to droop.

[03:15] The goal is to support without restricting. You want your plant to sway naturally in the breeze — this strengthens the stems — while the stakes prevent branches from snapping under the weight of heavy buds.
