[00:00] Hey
[00:40] guys, I'm Parker Curtis. Welcome back for another smoke test and strain review, and today's heavy hitter is Durban Poison. This is a well-known sativa and this is the parent of a lot of very other well-known strains. This particular strain was discovered in South Africa in about the 1970s. But one of the unique things about it, it's been cultivated in that area for thousands of years. So this is one of the very few unadulterated sativas available.
[01:08] So unlike a lot of other strains that we have a clear idea of the parentage, because this is a landrace strain, we know that it's a pure sativa, but we don't have a name for its actual parents. But we know that it's very well suited for growing in hot humid climates, and we know it's a sativa in its purest form.
[01:27] And that makes it a great daytime smoke, and you can see why people have been breeding it into other well-known strains. One of the most well-known is Girl Scout Cookies.
[01:39] So our main set was done about the beginning of March. This Durban Poison that I planted here was one of the batch tests later on. So this one was planted April 20th, and it's been curing and drying. This was the last plant that I took down out of the greenhouse, and it's been curing and drying and this is the first time that I'm going to be smoking it here today.
[02:03] This is a classic sativa, so the traits that you'll see in this are kind of skinnier leaves, very tall. It kind of grows like a Christmas tree. This thing is a monster. So, versus some of those indica strains that you see that are a bit more squatty, this thing is very sprawling and bushy and extremely tall.
[02:23] With the way things have been bred and hybridized, there's a lot of other things that have this mix in it, but there are not many strains on the market that are in their original state, and that's what they call a landrace strain. So all of these traits that you'll see on there are very pronounced and classic sativa.
[02:45] As far as sativas go, this flowers a bit more quickly than some of them, and so if you have a large area that you can grow, if you aren't worried about heights or privacy and you can plant directly in ground, this is a great option.
[03:00] This thing will surprise you at how large it gets and how quickly it gets to that point. Being down here in Southern California, had a lot of humidity to deal with that other plants didn't do so well with, and this was one that I never had to worry about. This plant I got about seven ounces, seven, eight ounces off of.
[03:37] Had to pull it a little bit early, but if you get it in the ground at the right time and let this thing go and give it plenty of room, sky's the limit on these things. This one that we grew in the greenhouse, this was the tallest in the greenhouse and it got to just under eight feet tall. It was about seven and a half, eight feet tall. And very robust stalks on this thing.
[04:23] I would still try to prune this thing and stake it out appropriately, because this thing is mostly height, so if you get in there and top these things appropriately, you can kind of curb those tendencies and bush it out for a higher yield.
[04:42] So the most common terpene in Durban Poison is pinene, and that's apparent all the way through the grow, all the way up until you're about to roll it up. It's very pine forward on this thing, and along with kind of this citrus smell to it. But it's very sharp on the nose and it kind of wakes you up, just like the high on this thing.
[05:04] This is the Durban Poison. This is the first that I'm smoking of it, and you can taste how resinous it is. You can taste it on your lips. It's just very sticky and it's like a pine sap. It's great.
[05:25] It smells like one of those essential oil purifiers. It's like a pine tree's been lit on fire here. It's definitely getting you high, but I feel like I want to go out and do stuff and get things done and that's definitely a useful tool to have in the toolbox.
[06:05] Definitely get that pine on there. It's all the way through the grow, even now breaking it up, but it really comes through on the smoke. It's just kind of a sappy, resinous taste. There's lots of other indicas and OGs that kind of put you right to bed. This is an uplifting high. I want to go do things and get things done and get some of my ideas out.
[06:39] This is a great one. If you don't like indicas and you don't like getting knocked out, and you want a sativa in its pure form, this is very hard to find out there. There's not many strains that aren't hybridized.
[07:00] So this is one of the very few unadulterated sativas available. And since then, through breeding, we've been able to increase its yield and potency. And so at this point, it can reach anywhere between 17% and about 25% THC.
[07:14] So for a sativa, this is a very strong one. So if you're prone to getting anxiety and panic attacks, this may not be the one for you because it's so potent. But you get kind of this espresso-like mind buzz from this. This is a very good daytime strain, and you can see how they've bred it into a lot of other well-known strains to kind of round them out.
[07:41] For instance, Girl Scout Cookies, this is one of the parents. Durban Poison, that's crossed with OG Kush. So this Durban Poison tends to have about a 17% THC, and through optimal cultivation, if you were going to do this indoor and have it at its peak, it can get all the way up to 25%.
[08:09] We've been able to increase yield and potency. It's retained all of those pure sativa qualities. The only thing that we've been doing is increasing yield and potency.
[08:26] So we've grown this Durban Poison from seed right here in the Homegrown Cannabis Co. greenhouse. And this strain has been a joy to grow. It flowered a bit quicker than I would expect from some of the sativas that we have to offer. This one was about 12 weeks or so, and some sativas can go a lot longer.
[08:55] If you have the room to grow this thing, if you are dealing with hot, humid climates, this would be a great one for you. And it's very resinous, so I had to watch out with the caterpillars, but the hardiness and the resistance to some of the molds that I experienced was great. I would definitely grow this one again.
[09:32] Just make sure you have space on this one. Very tall. Very sticky, piney smell to it. At about 12 weeks, that was just the right amount of time to get a good summer turnaround on this. If you want to grow Durban Poison from seed to stone at home, visit us at homegrowncannabisco.com.
